Gamblers hoping to get in on the action at the new Hollywood Casino York will have to wait a little longer.

The casino, which is under construction at the former Sears store at the York Galleria, will not be opening by the end of this year as originally expected.

The opening date now is projected for the second half of 2021, Penn National Gaming spokesman Jeff Morris said.

Construction on the casino was temporarily halted to preserve money because of the uncertainty with the pandemic, according to the company's quarterly report. The company does not expect to spend as much as previously budgeted for it in 2020 for capital expenditures.

Road work at the mall wrapped up last month after being interrupted by the coronavirus pandemic, according to Springettsbury Township.

The ring road around the mall reopened, allowing shoppers to access Target, Kohl's and Michaels from either Whiteford or Pleasant Valley roads.

In addition, the Whiteford Road intersection — the one closest to the casino — turned into right-in and right-out access only.

The casino will open with 500 slot machines and 20 table games, but that number could grow to 750 slot machines and 40 table games as allowed by law.

The 80,000-square-foot casino is expected to draw customers from south central Pennsylvania and northern Maryland, the company has stated.
